Move on.’ As Rankine’s brilliant, disabusing work, always aware of its ironies, reminds us, ‘moving on’ is not synonymous with ‘leaving behind.'” –The New Yorker The realization at the end of this book sits heavily upon the heart: ‘This is how you are a citizen, ‘ Rankine writes. “ is an especially vital book for this moment in time. In essay, image, and poetry, Citizen is a powerful testament to the individual and collective effects of racism in our contemporary, often named “post-race” society. Our addressability is tied to the state of our belonging, Rankine argues, as are our assumptions and expectations of citizenship. The accumulative stresses come to bear on a person’s ability to speak, perform, and stay alive. Some of these encounters are slights, seemingly slips of the tongue, and some are intentional offensives in the classroom, at the supermarket, at home, on the tennis court with Serena Williams and the soccer field with Zinedine Zidane, online, on TV-everywhere, all the time. 5/24/2023 0 Comments God of wrath rina kent seriesWell that was a dark romance full of prima! kin* and knife play. it's twisted and heart wrenching and it makes the HEA so much better! So excited for the next books in the series. OF COURSE, this book wasn't all sunshine and rainbows but that's the best thing about dark romance. The bathing and cooking scenes were simply the best. He opened up to Cecily and there were so many amazing scenes. What I really loved about him, was how he started softening for Cecily bit by bit and started realising that he didn't always have to hold the burdens and responsibilities he has inside. Let me tell you, they did not disappoint! As always Rina Kent just knows how to write a brutal, dark, possessive and obsessive hero. I was excited to read their story from the glimpses we had gotten of the characters as individuals and how they interacted with in each other, in the previous books. I was obsessed with Jeremy and Cecily the entire way through the book. AND by far my favourite narrators as well! Their voices were perfectly cast for these characters and it was such an enjoyable experience to listen to. This was my favourite in the series so far for sure. 5/24/2023 0 Comments JLA by Mark WaidCollects JLA #18-21, 32-33, 43-46, and two stories from JLA Secret Files #3.Ībout the Author Born in Hueytown, Alabama, Mark Waid has earned his living as a lounge singer, a magician, a disc jockey, an accountant, and in many other ways, but none of them as eclectic-or fun-as writing comic books. "For the love of god, charge your phone before bed!" One of my favorite things about the story is that it does not eschew modern trappings when it comes to problem-solving. If you could give Wendy one piece of advice, what would it be? In a lot of YA ferocity and strength are active roles, but for Darling I wanted to give flowers to an underappreciated type of strength: the ability to weather a storm. But, even though she's frightened and confused, she takes these challenges in stride and when it matters most she steps up to the plate to play a critical role in saving all of her new friends. The story of Darling takes place over one long excruciating night and many uncomfortable things are thrown Wendy's way. Ancrum’s latest to your TBR, be sure to check out this interview with the author. But if you need some extra incentive to convince you to add K. If you love twisted thrillers and Peter Pan reimaginings, we have some very good news for you! Darling takes a familiar tale and turns it into a dark and dangerous contemporary adventure you won’t want to miss. 5/24/2023 0 Comments An era of darknessIt's written more in a direct way to make us understand where and at what position the British left us and how ruthless they were towards the Indians. Also the book doesn't follow a chronological order or timelines. It's written more in the Laymen's format so that general readers (like myself) can understand the words. What I did not expect, however, was for this book to blow my mind, become one of my favourite reads of 2019, and make me think about it at almost every waking hour. And by that, I mean that when I picked up this book, I did not know what to expect. Quite frankly, The Best Lies came for me. Was it self-defense? In the 2016 publication of Aliens 30th Anniversary: The Original Comics Series, the original names returned. Yet, Ripley is always Ripley, even when she’s being cloned as she is in Alien Resurrection or is a synthetic, which is how she has been retconned for the comic series (as explained in the novelization of Earth War). Interestingly, these changes in the comic re-prints were first made in the novelization of Outbreak, which was released as a tie-in for Alien 3. More recently, Gearbox Software’s much-maligned video game, Aliens: Colonial Marines (2013), resurrected Corporal Hicks again for its own official continuation of the Aliens world, but on the page for the 1996 reprints onwards, Hicks became Wilks and Newt became Billy. In the films, Newt and Hicks had died, so to make things fit more neatly, the comic was expected to retroactively ditch them. Kennedy visited Buffalo on October 14, 1962, the day of the city’s beloved Polish heritage parade. Nearly two hundred thousand people spilled across Buffalo’s largest downtown square, angling for a glimpse of the most famous man on earth, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Now, a dozen years later, on this fall day in 1962, Lawson had returned to his home turf in a prestigious new role: He was an agent with the Secret Service, assigned to protect the president of the United States. He got his degree, married a fraternity brother’s sister, and joined an Army intelligence unit as the Korean War began. Lawson, the son of an elementary school teacher and a local banker, had left for college the summer after high school. The community, about sixty miles south of Buffalo, was best known for its chilly lake air, vineyards and apple farms, and families as hardy as the crops they tended. The thirty-four-year-old had grown up in a no-stoplight town along the banks of Lake Erie that few outside upstate New York had ever heard of: Portland, New York. Win Lawson, the shy, quiet worrier, felt proud. Win Lawson felt his chest puff out a little this particular day in Buffalo, his shoulders hiking his lanky frame just a little taller and straighter.
